Church with various and sundry family members at my cousin Andrew's church, and then dessert and chit-chat at his aunt on his other side's house, with some of his family on his other side (his dad is my dad's brother; this was his mom's family) and Andrew and his brother Michael and my sisters. Very nice evening.
I have a few more presents to wrap, and then sleep to have; the rest of the cooking can (and mostly should; make-ahead gravy? Eww) wait until tomorrow. |

Yesterday was a good day too. We ran the last of our errands in the morning (and Target etc. was a zoo; even the co-op was a zoo, filled with people who don't know how to do things like use bulk bins). I ran over to the parents' for some Scrabble and Yahtzee with Hope in the afternoon, came home, made some awesome homemade pasta, and then crashed out with a book. :)
Today is cooking day. I'd made a nice neat plan to start it yesterday... and then got very lazy. The cheese ball is already down. :) |

Yesterday was a good day.
Hope called in the morning, and I got a shower and got dressed and headed over to the parents' (and it takes five minutes now! Glee.) We headed into Burlington, wandered Old Navy for a bit, got her hair cut, ran some other errands, got lunch (wings and homemade potato chips, noms), wandered a bit more, then headed home for some Scrabble and Yahtzee. Then I headed home home, where Jeff and I built a compost bin. Val made dinner - beef and noodles - and we went to bed early, where I tucked up underneath my new electric blanket (so warm) and read a whole bunch of Coop.
It was a great day. And Faith will be home tonight or early tomorrow morning. Yay! :)

| iHate your iPhone |

I'm thinking of starting a support group for people who love people with iPhones. Good idea, y/n?
My main complaint is the lack of intelligible texting due to the so-called auto-correct feature on the iPhone, but I imagine other people would have issues with distraction, as well, and maybe fear for their loved ones' safety, because iPhone users tend to walk smack into stuff that's right in front of them. |

Oh, last night's funny: you know you've been watching a lot of Supernatural (6 episodes in one weekend) when 1) your honey has to wake you up out of a bad nightmare 2) it's about vampires and 3) when he asks what was wrong, you reflect for a moment, then answer groggily that you've been having the kind of dream one might expect to have when one had been ODing on Supernatural. |

| Have you missed me? |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|05:49 pm] |
The quarter is over, and I’ve got so much to tell you….
It’s been a hard quarter. Busier then ever, and I’ve done some pretty rewarding things. Now I’m trying to regroup and relax, focusing attention on a few less academic things, like getting the GRE done, and preparing for job hunting.
One of the things that I did during the quarter was purchase a Kindle. Two of my classes required a large amount of reading, and I compensated by buying a friend’s used Kindle thinking I would be able read the PDFs on the way to school.
The instructor who required 700 pages printed wasn’t ok with me using it in class, and not all of the readings worked on it, but in the end it was a smart purchase. I enjoy having a library of books with me , both class reference and fun reading. Amazon has had a variety of free books available, enough to keep me reading, and to encourage me to engage in reading a few new series.
It introduced me to
T.A. Pratt’s Marla Mason series, starting with Blood Engines,
Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series with His Majesty’s Dragon,
Lara Adrian’s Midngight Breed series, with Kiss of Midnight
Laurell Hamilton’s Merry Gentry series with A Kiss of Shadows
Morgan Howell’s Queen of the Orcs trilogy with King’s Property
as well as a number of one offs. Some were great. (T.A. Pratt) Some were not so great (Laurell Hamilton) , and others were pure guilty indulgence (Lara Adrian). I figure as long as it’s no worse then a Debbie Macomber, then I’m good to go.I’ve got an open mind, and will download and read just about anything. I’ve downloaded a handful of samples too, and a couple of short stories.
(Of course it’s always a surprise to download a free novel and find out that it’s erotica. With a Kindle, no one knows when you are reading porn)
I’ve bought a number of books full price on the kindle. T.A.Pratt and Lara Adrian specifically. The decision I am facing now? Well, while the Laurell Hamilton novel wasn’t great I wouldn’t mind picking up book number two.(Again, see “It’s not worse then Debbie Macomber” clause) I could pick up a used copy for .82 on Amazon, probably what it’s worth.
I like having books on the Kindle though, and when I factor in shipping, the difference is only around $1.50, at least for this book. The convience is appealing, though part of me refuses to cave in. I don’t want to pay “full price” for a series I’m not thrilled with. With the Debbie Macombers (and Maeve Binchys) I’m able to purchase the books used at a local bookstore, and in the end return them there when I’m done. It’s a nice little rental cycle that has built up $100 in credit at Balderdash.
In the end, I need to investigate how to get more books onto the Kindle, to try to move .mobi books from the library over, and come to terms that I’m paying for the luxury of having my library with me in a convienent package.

| We went, we saw, we conquered |
[Dec. 19th, 2009|12:39 pm] |
We realized that we were out of eggs, and the roads are looking decentish, and Jeff has snow tires, and the Homeland Creamery store was open (and they're just a few minutes away; well, when it hasn't snowed), so we went out. We took slightly more back roads than perhaps we should have on the way there - they were fine, just slow - and took the slightly longer but more main road route on the way back (good call, those roads were nearly clear). We obtained two dozen eggs, 3 pounds of sausage (there are sausage balls in our future for Christmas, noms), 3 pounds of cheese (and cheese straws), a half gallon of chocolate milk, and a half gallon of eggnog.
And now we're home, where we plan on staying tucked up for the rest of the day. |
